Icy cold walls. Sub-zero showers. Bundling up with winter coats at night to endure sleeping in freezing temperatures. This is the reality that tenants in a Bed-Stuyvesant building are facing on a daily basis.
The low-income, rent-stabilized 277 Gates Ave. building, as reported by the Daily News, is experiencing cold gridlocked days, where families all huddle around one another by a heater as to not freeze to death.
This is a situation that people of coming from similar low-income communities — ungentrified parts of Washington Heights and Harlem, Brownsville, etc. — experience on a regular winter basis. I remember when my family lived in the lower part of Washington Heights. We would wear sweaters and sweat pants to sleep, and wake up to take cold showers before we would all go to our respective schools or place of employment. Not a pretty picture, but one far too many families have to live with.
The Pratt Community Council alleges that it is doing everything in its power to remedy the situation. But the reality is that it is trying to escape the scrutiny of the press and had it’s name not reared it’s ugly head in the news, this problem would not be one about the be solved, but one that would have continued.
